1Mexico2014 Returns Home

EsTiempo2014Wanted to drop a quick update from the recent time in Mexico, and express thanks for the prayer support!  All team members made it safely back to their homes, and had a meaningful experience in my estimation.  I left Mexico on Cinco de Mayo – May 5th – which is interesting.

We were safe, (mostly) healthy, and productive while we were on the ground.  There were two teams, one for the first half and one for the second half, and I stayed a few extra days afterward for the conference Es Tiempo (It's Time) in Puebla with long time friends Jerry and Susy McNally and Living Hope International.

A Dangerous Assumption…

He made all the right decisions. He dated slowly, chose wisely, did everything I asked of him in pre-marital counseling, and despite all his wise choices, his wife left him just months into the marriage.

Shared, with permission, from the personal blog of Kevin A. Thompson, husband, father, and pastor.

She made all the right decisions. Three job offers were on the table. Her knowledge and ability was recognized by everyone. She prayed, sought wise counsel, and made the best decision she knew to make. Within the year the company failed and she was without a job.

There is a common assumption regarding God’s will. It’s the belief that success is the ultimate sign of choosing correctly. It’s the belief that if you make a decision which honors God, God will honor you with success. It’s a dangerous assumption.

Friendship

It was dollar-a-slice night at Carmela’s Pizza. This local dive was our favorite place to be on Tuesdays. While you might infer our affinity was due to the fact that Tuesday was also dollar draft night, the real reason for this ritual was simpler: Friendship. Sometimes all the guys would come out, but on this particular occasion it was just my Brazilian friend Davi (DAH'vee) and I. We sat at the usual spot, talking intermittently around grease logged bites of pizza. After we finished and paid the check, I stood up to go. But Davi didn’t stand up. Instead he looked up at me quizzically.
“Are you in a hurry?”
“Noooo, not really,” I replied, clearly puzzled.
He nodded his head and asked, “Do you have to be somewhere?”
I slowly shook my head and shrugged, “Nope, I don’t.” What does he want? I wondered, raising my eyebrows.
“Why don’t you sit down and lets talk for a while?” he indicated toward the booth seat opposite his.
“Ohhhhhh, ya!” came my slow reply. “I’d never thought of that before!” I stood there grinning like an idiot at my discovery:
I don’t have to get up and leave right away!
This is not another checkbox on my to-do list.
Huh…
